II. Ways of Coming to Know God

Man’s faculties make him capable of coming to a knowledge of the existence of a personal God. But for man to be able to enter into real intimacy with him, God willed both to reveal himself to man and to give him the grace of being able to welcome this revelation in faith. The proofs of God’s existence, however, can predispose one to faith and help one to see that faith is not opposed to reason.

According to this reading, there are two proofs of God’s existence, the world and mankind. The world illustrates the beauty and glory of God and we as men recognize and have the potential to understand that there must be a higher Being whose beauty is reflected in His creation. This is an excellent section to begin with if you want to root your faith in reason rather than emotion. Truthfully, everyone should ground their faith in reason so that when that emotional roller-coaster takes a nose dive, there is a solid foundation to catch you as you fall.
